PURPOSE:To improve the working efficiency in the production check process of a magnetic disk by forming a zero-track area containing plural zero-tracks at the outside of an information recording area and registering such a track that can be decided as a reference position in the form of a zero-track. CONSTITUTION:A zero-track area is provided at the outside of the most outer peripheral track of the information recording area 13 of a disk main body 12. The area 14 includes a 1st zero-track 14A to be used as an original zero- track as well as the spare zero-track candidates, e.g., 14B, 14C and 14D. When the power supply is turned on, a disk device moves a magnetic head toward outside and detects the track 14A to check the presence or absence of injuries of the track 14A. When no injury is detected, with the track 14A, the information is written and read based on the track 14A. If the injuries of the track 14A are confirmed, the track 14B is sought and the presence or absence of injuries is checked with the track 14B.
