PURPOSE:To realize an effective substituting process of sectors at high speed by providing a mapping sector which divides a disk into blocks and records the address correspondence information between the defective and substitute sectors at every block. CONSTITUTION:A disk 1 is divided into blocks #1-#N and the test data is recorded and reproduced at all sectors of each block to check the presence or absence of a sector address error, a data error or a defect of a data part. Then the mapping data on a mapping memory 17 which records the address correspondence information between a defective sector having an error and its substitute sector is stored in a mapping sector M1 or M2. In this case, the number of tracks of a block is selected at the value that enables a high-speed retrieval, i.e., within the movable range of the actuator of an optical head 1. In such a way, the sectors are substituted for each other at high speed.
