PURPOSE:To maintain the features of an input signal waveform even when it is displayed while the time base is compressed by generating a data segment corresponding to the difference between the maximum and minimum values of sampling data within a display period and displaying data per display period with the segment. CONSTITUTION:An input signal for drawing a waveform such as an electrocardiogram is inputted to an A/D converter 11 and converted into a digital signal. The sampling period at this time is set short enough to grasp speedy the variation of the input analog signal. Then a waveform arithmetic part 12 puts sampled data together at every display period time, selects the maximum and minimum values among them, and connects the maximum and minimum values to generate the data segment indicating data per display period. Data on an electrocardiogram which is computed by this arithmetic part 12 represents a waveform which maintains the features of the electrocardiogram. This data segment is written in a display dot matrix memory plane 13 according to write addresses generated by the arithmetic part 12, read out according to read addresses generated by a display address generator 14, and displayed on a display device 15.
