PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sterilization agent effective in extremely easily and effectively inducing male sterilization without losing the pollination capability of female, by using 1-ethyl-6-methyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-oxoniconitic acid or its salt as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective male sterilization agent for rice plant can be produced by using 1-ethyl-6-methyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-oxoniconitic acid or its salt (preferably a metal salt such as potassium salt, etc., or ammonium salt, etc.) as an active component at a weight ratio of 1-80%, preferably about 5-70% and mixing the active component with a solid carrier, a liquid carrier, a surfactant or other formulation assistants. It is used in the form of an emulsifiable concentrate, wettable powder, suspension, granule, liquid formulation, etc. The sterilization agent does not cause female sterilization and various other adverse effect against organs of plants. The agent is applied within a period from just before the start of the reproductive stage to ear emergence of rice plant.
