PURPOSE:To increase a volumetric recording density and to obtain a good envelope by disposing a magnetic recording layer consisting of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film on one face of a high-polymer film, disposing a lubricating agent thereon and forming a thin discontinuous film on the other face of the film so that the thickness over the entire part of the tape is reduced. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording layer 10 consisting of the thin ferromagnetic metallic film is disposed on one face of the high-polymer film 9 and the lubricating agent 12 (a protective film 11 may be provided thereon at need) is disposed thereon. The discontinuous film 13 is formed on the other face of the film 9. The discontinuous film 13 is obtd. by, for example, vapor deposition of a pattern using masking, etc. The thin film 13 on the side opposite from the magnetic layer 10 of the magnetic recording medium constituted in the above-mentioned manner is not continuous and, therefore, the dynamic resilience of the layer is maintained when the medium contacts a magnetic head. The good contact with the front face of the head is thus obtd. and the envelope is satisfactorily maintained. Balance can be maintained within a practicable range in the thin film part even if said part is discontinuous when the medium curls at the time of a temp. change. The high-density recording is thus permitted with the thin tape.
