PURPOSE:To evaluate the accurate durability of a magnetic tape in an extremely short time by evaluating the durability by using the maximum variation rate of a dynamic friction coefficient. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic tape 2 is extended between a moving post 1 which moves up and down and a fixed rotary post 4; and a weight 5 is fixed to one end and the other end is fixed through a tension measuring instrument 6. Then, the dynamic friction coefficient muK is found from an equation I, where thetais the winding angle around the post, W is the load of the weight, and F is tension. For the purpose, the moving post 1 is moved to increase the tape load continuously and the gradient of the variation rate of the dynamic friction coefficient found by measuring the Y coordinate and X coordinate of the post 1 at this time is coincident with the durability test of the magnetic tape very much. Thus, the maximum variation rate of the dynamic friction coefficient is found to evaluate the durability of the tape in an extremely short time.
