[Also in Division D1] Stilbene benzotriazole compounds of the general formula where (a) R 1 and R 2 are each alkyl containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive and M represents hydrogen or a salt-forming cation, and m and n are each 1; or (b) R 1 and R 2 are each alkyl containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or C 1-5 carboxy alkyl groups, at least one of R 1 and R 2 being a carboxy alkyl group, or R 1 and R 2 represent together the methylene group of a methylene-dioxy group, and M represents H or a cation, and m and n are each 0 or 1 and m + n is 1 or 2, are prepared by coupling a diazotized sulpho stilbene to an appropriately substituted aniline compound and oxidizing the resultant azoamino compound. The oxidation may be effected with copper sulphate, ferric chloride, ferric NH 4 SO 4 , H 2 O 2 , KMnO 4 , K 2 Cr 2 O 7 , CaOCl, Na perborate or oxygen. The compounds are useful as optical brighteners or whitening agents. |
