The invention relates to a device for cleaning a road, runway or the like, having a brush which can rotate about its axis and which is supported by supporting wheels or the like which, for their part, can be adjusted in height by means of an adjusting mechanism in order correctly to adjust the contact between the brush and the surface to be cleaned. The invention is characterised in that the adjusting device comprises a sensor connected to the brush in order to measure the diameter of the brush and, with the aid of a method and an actuating device which are known per se, to adjust the location of the supporting wheels with respect to the axis of the brush in accordance with the information supplied by the sensor.
