PURPOSE:To improve the quick warming-up property of the air conditioner at the time of starting the space heating by providing air flow rate control means for controlling the flow rate of discharge air so that the air flow speed detected by air flow speed detection means becomes equal to a preset air flow speed. CONSTITUTION:The speed of an air current in the vicinitity of a resident is detected by air speed detection means 25, and the discharge air flow rate from the main body 1 is controlled by flow rate control means. Accordingly, the present air flow speed is set to a value in such an extent that the resident does not have an air current feeling, for example, whereby it is possible to discharge air from the main body 1 without imparting the cold air feeling from the initial period of starting a speed heating operation. For this reason, the discharged hot air flow whose temperature has become higher than the room temperature in the rising period after starting of the space heating, reaches the floor surface from the initial time, and the hot air flow effectively acts to spread therefrom on the floor surface to warm the entire part of the chamber.
