PURPOSE:To measure the coefficient of statical friction between a toner and the surface of a photosensitive drum in the state approximating the actual use by bringing the toner into contact with the peripheral surface of the photosensitive drum and measuring the coefficient of statical friction in this state. CONSTITUTION:A toner 4 is stuck to the peripheral surface of a roll 1. This roll 1 is brought into contact with the upper face of a rotated photosensitive drum 6, and the roll 1 is pressed there so that a weight W of the roll 1 is applied to the drum 6. In this constitution, the roll 1 is rotated in accordance with rotation of the drum 6. This rotation is transmitted to a torque meter 8. According as the roll 1 is rotated, the torque load in the direction opposite to this rotation is applied to the roll 1 by the action of the meter 8. When this torque load and a maximum force of friction between the toner 4 and the peripheral surface of the drum 6 are balanced, rotation of the roll 1 is stopped. A maximum torque load at this stop moment is measured by a needle 8b of the meter 8, and the coefficient of friction between the toner 4 and the peripheral surface of the drum 6 is calculated in accordance with this torque load.
