PURPOSE:To obtain the titled device broad in the temperature range for low- temperature operation, with increased quick response capability at low temperatures, good in the orientation state of the liquid crystal layer, outstand ing in display characteristics, by using, as the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, a novel liquid crystal composition containing specific liquid crystal compound as a component. CONSTITUTION:The objective device made up of a base plate, electric voltage- applying means, orientation control layer and ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, using as said ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, a liquid crystal composition containing, as a component, a compound of formula I (* is asymmetric carbon; R1 is chain group capable of substitution; R2 is 1-8C chain alkyl; A1 and A2 are each six-membered ring-contg. divalent group capable of substitution; X and Y are each single bond or divalent chain group; n is integer 0-8; m is 0 or 1). Said compound of the formula I is e.g., a compound of formula II. For preparing the compound of the formula I, it is recommended, in general, that a carboxylic acid derivative be converted into the acid chloride in a conven tional manner followed by reaction with the corresponding alcohol derivative, etc. in the presence of alkali.
