A method for automatically compensating for the influence of different grades of fuel on the operating performance of a diesel engine is described, which is characterised in that a characteristic value for the peak pressure occurring in the cylinder in operation is detected by sensors and is compared with a stored reference value, and that the output signal of this reference-actual comparison is electronically processed to obtain a control variable for adjustment of the injection pump and/or of the intake air preheating of the diesel engine with the aim of making the actual value approximate to the reference value. In addition, a control circuit suitable for this purpose is described.
