PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolyester moldable in a molten state, having specific intrinsic viscosity and specific glass transition temperature, excellent heat resistance, mechanical characteristics and flame retardance, by reacting an aromatic diol with ethylene glycol and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:(A) A phosphorus-containing aromatic diol forming a structural unit shown by formula I (Ar<1> is trivalent aromatic group) is reacted with (B) an aromatic diol (e.g. hydroquinone) forming a structural unit shown by formula II (Ar<2> is bifunctional aromatic group), (C) ethylene glycol forming a structural unit shown by formula III and (D) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid, etc.) forming a structural unit shown by formula IV in an equimolar ratio of the components A+B+C and the component D, in a molar ratio of the component A and B of 95/5-5/95 and in an amount of the component C of 0.1-50mol% under normal. pressure at 150 deg.C to give the aimed copolyester having >=0.5 intrinsic viscosity and >=150 deg.C glass transition point.
