Dense billets formed from metal powder are produced by loading the powder into a carbon steel tubular container having a closed end, and a wall thickness of approx. not more than half inch, compacting the powder to a density approx. 80 percent of theoretical, covering with a loose inner plate approx. 3 inches thick, and a fixed outer cover, approx. 3 inches thick and heating the container to a temp. below the m. pt. of the container or powder. Whilst still hot, extruding the container at a reduction ratio of 3 to 1 at a pressure of 50000 psi. - Alternatively, extruding only sufficiently to extrude the fixed cover and the loose inner plate within the container.
