PURPOSE:To permit a large color change at a high speed by impressing an electric field to a thermotropic cholesteric liquid crystalline glutamate copolymer in parallel with the cholesteric spiral axis thereof at the temp. above the liquid crystal transfer temp. CONSTITUTION:The electric field is impressed to the thermotropic cholesteric liquid crystalline glutamate copolymer expressed by the formula I in parallel with the cholesteric spiral axis thereof at the temp. above the liquid crystal transfer temp. In the formula I, R1 denotes a group selected from the group consisting an alkyl group, cycloalkyl group, aryl group, and arylalkyl group of 1-10 C, R2 of 6-30 C. m And n are 50<=m+n<=2,000, m/n=80-10/20-90. The cholesteric color of the copolymer is thereby freely and quickly changed not by a temp. change but by the control of the impressed voltage and the time for impressing the voltage.
