PURPOSE:To obtain an immobilized microbial cell and/or enzyme, by mixing microbial cells and/or enzyme to an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, adding a natural polymer as an adjuvant, dripping the mixture into an aqueous solution of a calcium salt and freezing and thawing the obtained granular gel. CONSTITUTION:Microbial cells and/or enzyme are mixed with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol having a concentration of preferably >=8wt% and the mixture is added with preferably 0.2-2wt% sodium alginate or kappa- carrageenan. The obtained mixture is dripped into an aqueous solution of a calcium salt (e.g. CaCl2) having a calcium salt concentration of preferably >=2M to obtain spherical gel containing polyvinyl alcohol and the microbial cells and/or enzyme in the inner phase. After immersing the gel in the solution for about 10min, the gel is taken out of the solution, washed with water, thoroughly drained, frozen at <=-15 deg.C for >=2hr and spontaneously thawed to obtain a spherical polyvinyl alcohol gel.
