PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed substance in high selectivity and enhance catalyst life, by using silica-alumina containing alkali metals as a carrier in reducing 2,3,5-trimetylbenzoquinone with hydrogen using a platinum group metal to provide the titled substance. CONSTITUTION:2,3,5-Trimethylbenzoquinone is reduced with hydrogen using a platinum group metal supported on silica-alumina containing alkali metals as a carrier to provide the titled substance. The silica/alumina ratio of the carrier is preferably 90/10-40/60. Na is most preferred as the alkali metals and contained in an amount of 3-15wt% in the form of oxide, hydroxide, sulfate, silicate, etc. The alkali metals may be partially lost in a stage of supporting the platinum group metal, but the residual amount thereof is >=0.5%. Since the aimed substance is obtained in >=99% purity and the catalyust life is long, this method is economical.
