The floor covering, especially for car carpets and dirt mats, consists of a lower layer (10) and of a tread layer (14), knobs (16) being formed on the underside of the lower layer (10). The knobs are designed in the form of connected legs which between them form angles of less than 180@ and which, when the car carpet or the dirt mat is laid in a car, are oriented in a divergent manner in the direction of travel. The knobs are preferably made star-shaped.
