The present invention relates to a process for drying hygroscopic products of great thickness, especially wood, by alternate accumulation and dissipation of heat energy. This process is characterised in that it comprises two alternately repeated successive cycles, namely a first cycle 1 for accumulation of heat energy and a second cycle 11 for dissipation of heat energy or for pressure-reduction drying, the first cycle for accumulation of heat energy comprising a first heating stage in which the heat energy is communicated to the bulk of the product by forced and intensive convection of ambient air and a second diffusion stage in which the forced convection and the heating are stopped and in the second cycle 11 for pressure-reduction drying, there is carried out a pressure release or a condensation of the steam as a mixture in moist air at virtually constant hygrometry (relative humidity). <IMAGE>
