The subject matter of the invention is a rotary indexing table with a housing (10), a rotary plate (12) which can be rotated via an actuating mechanism (16) and worm gearing (34, 36) and can be locked with a clamping device (72, 74, 88), and a device (20) for setting and measuring the rotary position of the rotary plate. In order to be able to carry out spark-machining and grinding operations, the housing (10) is hermetically sealed, while the rotary plate (12) and the actuating mechanism (16, 18) are connected in a fluid-tight manner to the housing. Arranged on the spindle of the worm (36) or the rotary plate (12) is an electronic shaft encoder (54) which ensures a high measuring and setting accuracy. Furthermore, an electronic circuit arrangement (20, 99), acted upon by the output signal of the shaft encoder, is provided for indicating and storing the set and/or measured rotary angle. <IMAGE>
