Continuous strip steel processing line having direct firing furnace seeks to remedy the shortcomings of conventional direct heating arrangements by arranging multiple reducing flame burners (a) in pre-calculated positions and at a pitch (P) related to burner inner dia. (d) so as to form a non-equilibrium region in the flame which has combustion intermediate products but no free oxygen. The strip steel can thus be directly heated in a non-oxidising or reducing state.
