A process for stabilizing soils, for example fine-grained earth or clay, by using vacuum pumping to provoke settlements in the soil comprises the development of vertical drainage holes, which are coupled to suction pumps for the evacuation of drainage water, and the generation of underpressure in a region of the soil covered by an airtight tarpaulin, which, at its edges, is sealed against the soil, the atmospheric pressure contributing to the said settlements. The soils are first frozen to form ice crystals, which grow by water being drawn out of the soil/clay between the ice crystals, the ice crystals exerting a consolidating pressure on the mineral grain aggregates of the soil. The frozen region is rethawed by the supply of heat, after which excess water is drawn out of the soil and drainage holes by vacuum-pumping in order to provoke the said settlements, whereupon the region will appear as a depression. <IMAGE>
