A hydraulic pump (1) or hydraulic motor of adjustable volume of displacement, with a swivelling adjustment element (4) for adjusting the volume of displacement, with which the piston rod (17) of an adjusting cylinder (15) engages in a joint (19) with a spherical piston (16), which is adjustable by means of an actuating pressure flow. It is to be designed so that the adjusting cylinder (15) can generate pulling forces or perform pulling movements caused by the impingement of the actuating pressure flow. This is achieved by enabling the actuating pressure flow to be admitted to the piston ring chamber (37), and having the piston rod (17) sealed by a seal (29) that permits a radial oscillating motion of the piston rod (17). <IMAGE>
