A crank arm (14) is pivotably mounted on a starting shaft (10). The drive connection is made by way of a coil spring (32), connected to the crank arm (14), which spring tightens on the starting shaft (10) if its other end (36) is held fast by a mechanism (42) on the starting shaft (10). This occurs when the starting shaft (10) is turned in the starting direction (arrow). If the starting shaft (10) starts in the opposite direction or a compression surge cannot be overcome by the torque applied, the coupling between the mechanism (42) and the starting shaft (10) is released by a relative movement between the starting shaft (10) with mechanism (42) and a casing (12) pivotably mounted on the starting shaft (10). <IMAGE>
