A method of reducing the viscosity of an aqueous coal slurry, which comprises adding a viscosity-reducing effective amount of a partial ester of particular aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acids with particular phenyl polyglycol ethers substituted by alkyl or alkylaryl groups having the formula I (I) is disclosed, along with aqueous coal slurries containing the viscosity-reducing compound.
