Artificial knee joints comprise two prosthetic connection members between which there is a force-transmitting structural unit. A main field of application is exarticulation of the knee, that is to say, amputation in which neither bone nor muscles are severed. In the novel knee joint, a four-membered gear with a stay (14), an upright (16), a front rocker (18) and a slide (20) slideable on the upright are arranged as a force-transmitting structural unit between an upper prosthetic stem (10) and a lower connecting pipe (12). The upright (16) is formed by two wings (24, 26) located at a distance from one another and between which the front rocker (14) can plunge during flexion of the knee joint. This permits a low overall height in the bent position. The components of the knee joint are made of a high-strength laminate resulting in a low intrinsic weight. <IMAGE>
