The application relates to a process for the preparation of 4,4'-dimethoxybenzoin by benzoin condensation of 4-methoxybenzaldehyde in the presence of dimethylformamide and/or N-methylpyrrolidone as solvent at temperatures from 60 to 120 DEG C in the presence of 0.1 to 0.25 equivalent of an alkali metal cyanide.
