Alpha acetylenes removed by contacting liq. hydrocarbon stream with catalyst comprising finely divided Cu and minor amts. of polyvalent activator metal(s) e.g. Ag, Pt, Pd, Mn, Co, Ni, Cr, Mo dispersed on high purity gamma aluminium oxide support. The gamma aluminia is defined by the Joint Committee on Powder diffraction Standards (JCPDS 29-63, has 68-350 sq.m/g. surface area, and 90-60% pores have pore dia. 40-120 A and 2-25% have pore dia. 1000-10,000 A. It contains below 0.15 wt.% Si as SiO2, below 0.15 wt.% Na as Na2O, 0.01 wt.% S, below 0.06 wt.% Fe as Fe2O3, and up to 35% wt. alpha alumina. Copper metal is present at 3-13 wt.% of supported and combined activator metals at 0-15% of the Cu metal. The catalytic metal is applied to the support by reduction of metal nitrate salts of an aq. soln. contg. Cu, Ni, Mn, Ag, Cr and Co nitrates in sufficient H2O at pH 6.5-7.5 to wet the surface of the support. The catalyst decreses the hydrogenation of valuable diolelins (partic. butadiene) without decreasing the hydrogenation of the alpha acetylenes. |
