PURPOSE:To restore a conditional decision type dither picture into an halftone picture by setting a unit area, scanning a binary picture on the unit area, counting the number of white level picture elements and using the result as an estimated halftone picture value. CONSTITUTION:Optical information in the unit area of a binary picture 1 is mapped as it is on a photoelectric transducer 4 via a condenser lens 2. A scanner 5 switches an output of each unit of the photoelectric transducer 4 sequentially and sends the result to an A/D converter 6. An electronic circuit 7 receives an output of the A/D converter 6 to count the number of white picture elements in the unit area and outputs the count value as the value of halftone density estiamation of a 1st row and a 1st column (1, 1). In completing the processing above, the scanning opening is moved next to the 1st row and a 2nd column (1, 2). The similar scanning is repeated up to the final column of a last row to complete the halftone density estimation sequence. The estimated halftone picture data are used for various picture processings.
