The invention relates to a method and a device for carrying out the method for preventing the propagation of suspended matter in a body of water. In this device, disadvantages of known fixed suspended-matter barriers, for example that ships can no longer be moved into the area of the body of water which is separated off with the said barriers, are to be avoided. For this purpose, there is provision for a movable, flexible, curtain-like device to be arranged in the said body of water, which device opens a passage for a ship to pass through and, in the closed state, prevents the suspended matter from propagating through the curtain-like device.
