PURPOSE:To produce the titled novolak having moderate molecular weight in high efficiency, by using a sulfide and formaldehyde as raw materials and reacting the materials in a specific organic solvent in the presence of an acidic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)sulfide is reacted with formaldehyde at a formaldehyde/sulfide molar ratio of 0.5-2.0 in the presence of an acidic catalyst in an organic solvent capable of dissolving bis-(4-hydroxy-3- methylphenyl)sulfide and having a boiling point of 90-160 deg.C under normal pressure. The organic solvent used is e.g. isobutyl alcohol, n-butanol, etc.
