PURPOSE:To provide an optimum velocity of intake air flow responding to a load, by a method wherein a timing valve, opened at a timing not overlapped with the opening timing of a suction valve, is provided upstream a suction port, and a means, actuated so that the more a load is increased, the more the volume of a suction passage running between the two valves is increased is provided. CONSTITUTION:A timing valve 38, rotated in linkage with rotation of a crank shaft 44 and opened at a timing not overlapped with the opening timing of a suction valve, is provided upstream a suction port 22 of each cylinder. An expansion chamber 54 is provided between the timing valve 38 and the suction valve, and a varying plate, varying the volume of the interior of the ecpansion chamber, is moved by means of an actuator 58. During the suction stroke of an engine, air stored in a suction passage 56, containing the expansion chamber 54, at one cycle is gradually sucked in conformation to the suction action of a piston. During high load running, a control unit 60 works an actuator 58 in response to an accel opening signal and a number of revolutions of engine signal so that the expansion chamber 54 is increased.
