PURPOSE:To rapidly process a character string including various types of the characters by providing respective converting device for converting an input character string into a desired character and an alphanumeric character half em designating device for designating the conversion from the input character string to the alphanumeric character of the half em. CONSTITUTION:An input device 12 is used and the character string is inputted in a Roman character. At this time, when it is desired to input it in the half em, an input mode setting device 11 is set to a half em mode to input the character. When it is not set to the half em mode, the character string is processed as an em mode. Then, the respective converters 13 for KANA (Japanese syllabary), KATAKANA (square form of Japanese syllabary), KANJI (Chinese character) and the alphanumeric character are used to convert into the desired types of the characters respectively. When the alphanumeric characters are mixed in the Japanese sentence, when only the alphanumeric characters is desirably processed as the half em and other type of the characters as the em, the designation is carried out by the alphanumeric half em designating device 14. When this designation is performed, if the alphanumeric conversion is executed, an object character string is converted into the alphanumeric character of the half em without relating to the mode.
