PURPOSE:To form a Ti-Al intermetallic compound member excellent in compactibility, by charging a powder mixture of prescribed percentage of Al and Ti into a vessel to undergo deaeration and by subjecting the above in a condition sealed in a glass capsule to cold isostatic pressing treatment. CONSTITUTION:Powdered Al and powdered Ti having about 1-1,000mum grain size, respectively, are uniformly mixed in a ratio of 14-50wt% to 50-86wt%. The resulting mixture is charged into a vessel to undergo deaeration treatment by means of a vacuum pump, etc. The mixture after deaeration or, if necessary, a green compact prepared by compacting the mixture is sealed in a glass capsule under vacuum. After that, in the condition sealed in the glass capsule, the above-mentioned mixture or green compact is subjected to hot isostatic pressing treatment under the temp. and pressure conditions, for forming Ti-Al intermetallic compounds, of a temp. between about 400 deg.C and the liquidus temp. of the above mixture and a pressure of >=about 200kgf/m<2>, respectively. In this way, Al is diffused into Ti, so that Ti-Al intermetallic compounds can be formed.
