PURPOSE:To attain a mail service function, a file transfer function and a program transfer function or the like between different kinds of LANs by setting a specific control task onto a personal terminal so as to provide a specific gateway function. CONSTITUTION:LAN protocol control tasks 2, 3 having a data link layer, placed to a data link layer, a network layer and a transport layer of an OSI (open type inter-system interconnection) seven-layer model and having a LAN connec tion gateway function such as flow control, network address conversion and format conversion and a protocol conversion control task 4 placed to the session layer are provided to a personal terminal comprising >=2 communication ports (LAN boards) 7, 8 so as to attain the inter-program communication between personal terminals on different kinds of local area networks. Thus, the functions such as mail service function, file transfer function and program transfer func tion between different kinds of LANs are obtained.
