The subject of the application is the new compound 1-(2',3'-dihydroxypropyl)amino-4-(N-ethyl-N-2'-hydroxyethyl)amino-2-ni trobenzene of the formula (I) <IMAGE> and hair dye compositions containing this compound or its physiologically tolerated salts. The compound is a blue nitro dye which goes directly onto the hair and which is more favourable, with regard to its water solubility, colour purity and toxicological properties, than known blue nitro dyes of similar structure.
