A metallising device with a cooled feed tube serves for the application of a metal layer to a web which is to be metallised. The metallising device comprises a vaporiser which consists of at least one graphite boat having a depression which is open in the direction of the web and contains the metal to be vaporised and which is mounted in a holder formed as a feed tube. The holder has a cooling chamber through which a coolant flows. This cooling ensures rapid removal of the thermal energy emitted by the boat and reliably prevents sintering of the metal, fed as wire, to the inner walls of the feed tube.
