PURPOSE:To improve the formability and the frictional performance of a friction material by using, as a fibrous base material, either a plaster fiber independently or a plaster fiber jointly with asbestos-fiber alternative fibers which have hitherto been used. CONSTITUTION:As a fibrous base material, either a plaster fiber is used independently or a plaster fiber is used jointly with asbestos-fiber alternative fibers. The asbestos-fiber alternative fibers of one or more types may be used jointly with the plaster fiber. Since a problem in the formability arises if the additional compounding quantity of the plaster fiber within a fibrous base material is less than 10 percent by weight or more than 50 percent by weight based on the quantity of a non asbestos system friction material for the final brake, a 10-50 percent by weight is suitable for such quantity as mentioned above. While, if the total additional compounding quantity of the fibrous base material is less than 10 percent by weight based on the quantity of a non-asbestine friction material for the final brake, the material reinforcing effect is insufficient, and if it is more than 65 percent by weight, the volume of mixing is too large, therefore, a 10-65 percent by weight is suitable for such quantity as mentioned above.
