PURPOSE:To prevent a work from striking against a cutting tool by properly setting the quick-feed amount of the tool through providing a sensor holder, which is originally arranged with a fixed distance from the tip end of the tool and then brought into contact with the work. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder 24 is arranged in parallel with a spindle 7 by a rotary cylinder 21 such that the cylinder 24 is able to have a space with the spindle 7. A guide bar 25 is slidably arranged on the cylinder 24. A sensor holder 34 is fixed to the tip end of the bar 25 and is also fixed to the tip end of a cylinder rod 33 protruding from the cylinder 24, and is adapted to move to-and-fro keeping holizontal level by the held of the cylinder 24. Sensors 35a, 35b are set on the sensor holder 34. The sensor holder 34 retreats to approach a tool 5 of the spindle 7 according to a machining command, advances when the sensor 35b touches the tool 5, advances quickly with its state when it is moved to some extent, and stops when the sensor 35a touches a work 1. Next, the holder 34 rotates holizontally to retreat from the spindle 7 and the spindle 7 advances to start cutting operation.
