PURPOSE:To obtain a medium having a particularly good electromagnetic conversion characteristic by using a magnetic coating compd. formed by kneading a magnetic layer forming component and the 1st solvent having a specific solubility parameter, then adding the 2nd solvent thereto in such a manner that the org. solvent in the magnetic coating compd. has the specific solubility parameter, and dispersing the magnetic layer forming component into the org. solvent. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic coating compd. prepd. by dispersing the magnetic layer forming component contg. ferromagnetic powder and resin component into the org. solvent is coated on a nonmagnetic substrate, then the coating layer is dried. The magnetic coating copd. is obtd. by kneading the magnetic layer forming component and the 1st solvent having >=9.5 [cal.cm<-3>]<12> solubility parameter obtd. by a small method, then adding the 2nd solvent to the kneaded mixture in such a manner that the solubility parameter of the org. solvent in the magnetic coating compd. attains <9.5[cal.cm<-3>]<12> and dispersing the magnetic layer forming component into the org. solvent. The solubility parameter of the 1st solvent is within the range of 9.5-11.5[cal.cm<-3>]<12>.
