PURPOSE:To optimize a keyboard, by building a one-chip microcomputer (hereinafter referred to as microcomputer) in the keyboard, and controlling the definition of a key by inputting a bit of key definition information which changes a key arrangement on the keyboard. CONSTITUTION:An arithmetic part 1 and a keyboard 2 in a personal computer are separated from each other, and are connected by a bus line. The keyboard 2 is constituted of an interface circuit 3 to be connected to the arithmetic part 1, a key code changing memory (RAM)4, a microcomputer 5, and a key matrix 6. At such a time, by providing a ROM5A in which an operation procedure for the change of the key definition is stored, in the microcomputer 5, discriminating whether a code is a key definition changing code, and discriminating a designated key definition out of plural kinds of definitions if the code is the changing code, the RAM4 is changed to a desired key definition. In this way, corresponding to a program executed at the arithmetic part 1, the key arrangement can be changed to the one most fitted for the program.
