Process for preparing fused tungsten carbide, in which the starting materials are mixed, the fused tungsten carbide is melted under protective gas in a fusion crucible, the melt is quenched and the material is shaped into a starting product for further use. The mixture is introduced into a carbon-free fusion crucible and the fused tungsten carbide is melted therein in an electric arc. The molten fused tungsten carbide is subsequently cast continuously under protective gas onto a cooled turntable rotating at a predetermined rotation rate and flung off this, solidifying under protective gas into fused tungsten carbide balls.
