The compsn. (I) comprises (a) 50-90 pts.wt. 45-60% bitumen emulsion with a clay emulsifier, contg. 50-350 mVal Zn ions per 100 g clay, at pH 9-13; (b) 0.1-1.5 pts.wt. mixt. of a cold- and a hot-vulcanisation accelerator in ratio 3:1 to 1:3; (c) 0.1-1.5 pts.wt. ground or colloidal sulphur; (d) 10-40 pts.wt. 35-55% styrene-butadiene latex of styrene content 20-35 wt.% and anionic emulsifier based on fatty acids and alkyl arylsulphonates; (e) as stabilisr, 0.01-5 pts.wt. alkoxylated alkylphenol, alcohol or amine, with alkoxylation no. 3-10, and (f) 0.5-15 pts.wt. ground or fibrous filler. Seamless, monolithic sealing layers formed from (I), with or without an adhesive intermediate layer, on a substrate, are also claimed. (I) pref. also contains 0.05-1.5 pts.wt. aq. dispersion of polyacrylate which thickens in alkaline medium, or dispersion of a butadiene-styrene-methacrylic acid copolymer. Cold-vulcanising accelerator is a Na dithiocarbonate and hot-vulcanising accelerator is a Zn dithiocarbonate and/or a thiuram disulphide. Stabiliser is alkoxylated 7-12 C-alkyl-phenol and/or alkoxylated linear alcohol or alkoxylated 10-20 C linear monoamine; alkoxy gps. are ethoxy. Filler is kaolin or rockflour and/or asbestos powder or asbestos fibres or organic fibres, partic. textile waste or animal hair. 0.05-2.0 wt.% of 10-50% soln. of a Mg salt is added to (I) and thickening is stopped after reaction for 10-120 minutes. (I) has on upper surface protective layer of a heavy mineral. USE/ADVANTAGE - Covering roofs on new and reconstructed buildings, sealing in road construction, structural, civil, and hydraulic engineering. (I) is cold-processable, can be prepd. with viscosity varying over a range, sets quickly even in thick layers, and gives seal with good extension even at low temp. and good resistance to ageing, root growth, and water.
