PURPOSE:To make it possible to lower connection loss of an optical fiber by making the grain size of diamond abrasive particles of a final finish grindstone relatively smaller than that of previous process and making the abrasive particle density in a binder relatively greater than that of the previous process. CONSTITUTION:Grain size of diamond abrasive particle 5b of a final finish process grindstone 8b is made relatively smaller than that of a grindstone 8a for a previous process and at the same time the abrasive particle density in a binder 6 of the grindstone 8b is made relatively greater than that of the previous process. Since the abrasive particles 5 are fixed in these grindstones 8, even if an optical fiber 1 is surrounded with protective cylinders 2 and 3 which are harder than the optical fiber 1, the front end of the optical fiber 1 is not ground more than enough so that the entire front end is processed to an accurate convex spherical surface. Also, since the grain size of the abrasive particles 5 of the grindstone 8b for the finish process is made smaller and the density in the binder is made greater, the end surface of the optical fiber can be processed to be smooth enough. Thus, connection loss can be lowered. |
