PURPOSE:To easily find IC cards even if the variety of IC cards exist mixingly for many purposes and to reduce wrong use by permitting a host device to sort out IC cards according to classification codes stored in IC cards. CONSTITUTION:The IC card 11 is constituted with a nonvolatile memory 15 which consists of a data storage area 12, a classification code storage area 13 storing codes to sort out IC cards, and a program storage area 14 storing a program to transmit classification codes, and a microprocessor system 16. The IC card 11 is connected to the host device 19 through a transmission line 17 and a reception line 18. Accordingly to an instruction from the host device 19 through the reception line 18 the microprocessor system 16 reads, executes the program in the program storage area 14, and transmits the classification code in the classification code storage area 13 to the host device 19 through the transmission line 17. The host device identifies and sorts out the IC card 11.
