The use of equipment with positive end expiration pressure (PEEP) results in reduced cardiac output and reduced blood circulation because the heart is surrounded by a lower pressure than the normal (increased intrathoracic pressure). By means of equipment according to the invention the intrathoracic pressure is selectively reduced during a small part of the heart cycle in which it has the most harmful effect. The equipment reduces the thoracic pressure by providing a negative pressure source for the PEEP valve 14 and comprises a detector 16 for detecting a patient's successive heartbeats and a computer 18 connected to the detector 16 for calculating a period of time between the successive heartbeats. In addition a valve 24 is electrically connected to the computer 18 and pneumatically connected to a respirator 12 for controlling this, the valve 24 being designed to stop the supply of excess pressure in accordance with the calculated period of time. <IMAGE>
