Self-extinguishing fire-retardant compsn. consists of an aq. 25-90 wt.% emulsion contg. 1.5-50% water-emulsified resin(I) solids, 1.5- 20% (organic) halogen compd. (II), 1.5-70% low-temp. fibers(III) and 5-70% clay. The compsn. is specified for coating the insulation of an electric cable. After application, it forms a self-extinguishing fire barrier and does not retain heat in normal operation. It gives the desired results without the use of asbestos, reduces possibly toxic constituents and forms a flexible coating. Pref. (I) is vinylacetate polymer or acrylic resin.
