PURPOSE:To improve an arc discharge characteristic and the service life of a tungsten electrode by adding calcium oxide to said electrode. CONSTITUTION:The tungsten electrode 12 is formed at the center of a gas shielding cup 11 and a conductor is provided around the electrode 12. An inert gas passes from the cup 11 to the outside as shown by arrows 13 and is ejected therefrom to generate an arc, by which a molten metal 14 is welded to a base metal 15. The tungsten is used for the electrode 12 which is a cathode material and the thermionic emission is made effective by adding the calcia thereto in this TIG welding. The stable operation is thereby executed even at a low temp. and the ling-period use is made possible. This material is also effective in decreasing man-hours.
