摘要 PURPOSE:To drive a liquid crystal element having a high speed responsiveness, and also, having a picture element of a high density, so that a display state of the picture element is not inverted in the course of scanning one screen, by applying an alternating voltage to the picture element at a specified time. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric liquid crystal cell 41 having a scan electrode group 42 and a signal electrode group 43, and consisting of an optical modulation element having a bistability against an electric field is driven by the first step for applying a voltage which is used as a display based on the first stable stage, to a prescribed picture element, and the second step for applying a voltage which is used as a display based on the second stable state. Said cell is driven without inverting a picture element display being in the course of a scan, by applying an alternating voltage to the picture element, before starting the second step by the next m+1-th picture element, after the second step of the m-th picture element is ended. According to his driving method, a liquid crystal panel having a high resolution and a large screen is displayed.
