In a method for the regeneration of filter systems for the exhaust gases of vehicle internal combustion engines by oxidation of deposited particles by means of secondary electrical energy the alternator is switched on in the idling or overrun phase of vehicle operation, in order to convert the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy, and the electrical energy generated by the alternator is fed to the particle filter system as secondary energy.
